The former Benedictine monastery of Sandau, once a significant complex near Landsberg am Lech, bears witness to a long history dating back to the early Middle Ages. Today, the preserved monastery church is the primary reminder of the former convent, having undergone multiple transformations over the centuries and offering insights into its architectural evolution.
History+
The monastery of Sandau was founded around 740 by the counts Waldram, Eliland, and Landfrid from the noble Huosi family, who were also involved in the establishment of other monasteries in the region. In the course of the 9th and 10th centuries, the monastery likely suffered two destructions. Despite these setbacks, the stone monastery church endured and was continuously rebuilt and maintained. The monastery was once granted market rights, which transferred to the town of Landsberg after its destruction.

The former monastic complex was situated on the right bank of the Lech river, on the northern edge of the present-day urban area of Landsberg am Lech in Upper Bavaria. The geographical elevation here is approximately 624 meters above sea level.

Of the original monastic complex, primarily the former monastery church remains today. Archaeological findings allow for a reconstruction of its building history and attest to the resilience of this sacred building.
