Kloster Sankt Oswald

The monastery was founded in 1396 by Landgrave Johann von Leuchtenberg. Initially, until 1427, it was the only Pauliner monastery in Bavaria and was granted the parish of Grafenau, which had been elevated to a town twenty years prior, to ensure its economic foundation. Due to disputes and Hussite raids, the Pauliners withdrew. In 1431, Pope Eugen IV transferred the monastery to the Augustinian Canons, who settled it from the monasteries of St. Nikola in Passau and Suben. After the death of the last provost Wolfgang Heigl in 1563, the monastery stood empty. At the request of Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria, Abbot Paulus Gmainer of the Benedictine monastery of Niederaltaich sent monks to Sankt Oswald in 1567. The monastery was dissolved in 1803 as part of the secularization.

The monastery of Sankt Oswald is situated in the municipality of Sankt Oswald-Riedlhütte in the Bavarian district of Freyung-Grafenau.

Since 1817, the complex has served as a parish church and parish hall. After a fire in 1876, the current church was rebuilt by 1882. A guesthouse now stands on the former monastery grounds. Annually, Sankt Oswald hosts the historic Garnsamstag with a solemn pilgrimage service and a market in front of the church.
