Benediktinerkloster St. Gangolph, Münsterappel

The existence of the monastery of St. Gangolph is documented as early as before 853. Originally founded as a provostry of the Benedictine abbey of St. Maximin in Trier, after King Arnulf of Carinthia transferred the land on the Appelbach to this abbey in 893, it developed into an important ecclesiastical hub. The monastery was dissolved in the 13th century. The vogtei over the monastery passed to the Wildgraves of Dhaun and Grumbach in 1303 and later fell to the Rheingraves. The first documented mention of a new church building dates from 1344, although no remains of this construction have survived. In 1401, as a rural chapter of the Archdiocese of Mainz, the monastery oversaw a total of 31 parishes. A late Gothic church with a nave and choir was built in 1492. The Reformation was introduced in 1555 in the Grumbach lordship, and thus also in Münsterappel, leading to the dissolution of the monastery. The church was subsequently used as a simultaneum for Lutherans and Catholics until 1697, while the regional rulers appropriated the monastic properties.

Münsterappel Monastery is located in the municipality of Münsterappel in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, situated directly on the Appelbach.

The former monastery buildings are no longer in use as such today. The church was used as a simultaneum after the Reformation, and the properties were appropriated by the regional rulers.
