History+

The origins of the Benedictine monastery of St. George are not fully clear, but evidence exists from around 1046. It is believed that the monastery was founded in the 10th century as the house monastery of the Ekkehardiner near their original ancestral seat at Gene, close to the confluence of the Unstrut and Saale rivers. Archaeological findings suggest that this ancestral seat was located in the area of Kapellenberg in Kleinjena. Margrave Ekkehard I is considered the founder. After the year 1000, the Ekkehardiner's ancestral seat was moved to the eastern bank of the Saale to the New Castle, later Naumburg. The monastery was also relocated there at that time. At this point, St. George was the only monastery in the Diocese of Zeitz and the first Benedictine abbey east of the Saale. Between 1028 and 1032, the margraves arranged for the relocation of the episcopal see from Zeitz to Naumburg. In 1532, the monastery was largely destroyed by a fire, with only a few parts of the buildings remaining.
