St. Mang's Abbey

The origins of St. Mang Monastery date back to the year 801, when the Benedictine abbey was founded. Its establishment was closely linked to the work of the hermit Magnus, whose burial place formed the spiritual foundation. Strategically located on the Via Claudia Augusta and the Füssen gorge, the monastery also served the political interests of the Augsburg bishops. In the Middle Ages, the monastic community repeatedly joined reform movements, leading to spiritual and economic prosperity. Between 1696 and 1726, the current Baroque building was erected under Abbot Gerhard Oberleitner. The architect Johann Jakob Herkomer designed the complex symmetrically and transformed the medieval basilica into a Baroque church inspired by Venetian models, serving as a monumental reliquary for Saint Magnus. The fresco program in the church depicts the life story of the local saint. In the late 18th century, the convent increasingly dedicated itself to social tasks such as pastoral care, science, and education. During the secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1803 and became the property of the Princely House of Oettingen-Wallerstein. The former monastery church was transferred to the parish of Füssen in 1837.

St. Mang Monastery is situated in Füssen in the Ostallgäu region, Bavaria, Germany. It is located at an elevation of approximately 814 m above sea level.

Today, the former monastery complex is divided between two owners. The former monastery church serves as the parish church of Füssen and is an essential part of the town's appearance.
