St. Maria ad ripa

The monastery's origins date back to the 7th century when Benedictine monks established a community here. In 882, the complex suffered severe damage during Norman raids. In the 10th century, canons temporarily inhabited the monastery. A notable episode was the so-called Mosel Feud between 1006 and 1015, during which the monks were expelled and replaced by canons. Following the resolution of the conflict in 1017, the Benedictines returned. In the 12th century, it was renamed St. Maria ad Martyres, reflecting the importance of saint veneration at that time. Despite a period of prosperity in the Middle Ages, which temporarily made the monastery wealthier than the nearby St. Martin's Abbey, economic difficulties began in the 14th century. The monastery had to be rebuilt twice after destructions, including in 1675, when it was demolished during the Dutch War on the orders of Marshal Créquy to deny cover to attackers. Around 1730, a reconstruction in Baroque style took place.

The monastery is located in Trier, a city in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, in what is now the Trier-Nord district.

After the French conquest of Trier in 1794, the monastery served as a barracks. Between 1804 and 1807, during the secularization under Napoleon, the monastery church and parts of the residential buildings were demolished. The remaining east wing was used by the Prussian army in the 19th century as barracks and later as an administrative seat for division commanders. Today, the building houses a youth center.
