St. Peter's Abbey on the Madron

The monastery of St. Peter was founded in 1130 by Count Siboto von Falkenstein, with monks from Weihenstephan Monastery undertaking the initial settlement. In 1296, during armed conflicts over the German imperial crown, the complex was destroyed by Count Megingoz von Surberg; only the pilgrimage church remained intact. Despite compensation and the return of Provost Heinrich in 1297, the monastery was not rebuilt. From the 14th century until the secularization in 1803, Madron served as a titular provostry. The church was saved from demolition in 1803 through its purchase by local farmers. After a period of private ownership, the building was transferred to a branch church foundation in 1971 and returned to the Catholic Church. Extensive restorations and excavations, which unearthed finds from the Bronze Age to the 16th century, followed in 1971/72 and from 1997 to 2004.

The former monastery is located on Kleiner Madron, also called Petersberg, in the municipality of Flintsbach in the district of Rosenheim, Bavaria, Germany. The complex is situated at an elevation of approximately 837 meters above sea level.

The former monastery church is now part of a branch church foundation and is used by the Catholic Church. The entire ensemble, including the former provostry, is a protected monument. The church's roof truss features a rare, largely original medieval section dating from 1379/80. Inside, a wooden coffered ceiling from 1609/10, altars, and a cycle of seven large-format oil paintings depicting scenes from the life of the church's patron saint shape the interior impression. A late Romanesque crucifix from the 13th century is considered the oldest wooden sculpture in the Rosenheim district.
