The Benedictine Monastery of St. Salvator in Fulda, situated in the heart of Hesse, is a significant historical sacred building whose foundation in the 8th century formed the nucleus of today's city of Fulda. It is considered one of the most important monastic foundations in early medieval Germany.

History+

The origins of the monastery date back to 744 when it was established by Sturmius on behalf of the missionary archbishop Winfried Boniface. Boniface appointed Sturmius as the first abbot and laid down the rules of Benedict of Nursia for monastic life. The abbey was dedicated to the Most Holy Savior. Over the centuries, the monastery evolved into an influential ecclesiastical principality within the Holy Roman Empire, whose abbots bore the title of Prince-Abbot from 1220. In 1752, Pope Benedict XIV elevated it to a Prince-Bishopric, before the institution was dissolved in 1803 as part of the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss (Imperial Recess).

Location+

The former monastery is located in the city of Fulda in the federal state of Hesse, Germany. It stands at an elevation of approximately 260 meters above sea level.

On site+

The former Benedictine abbey no longer operates as an independent monastery today, but its legacy significantly shapes Fulda's cityscape and history. The former monastic buildings and the later cathedral bear witness to the site's past importance.
