Theres Abbey

The monastery of Theres was founded in 1001 by the Benedictine order. Over the centuries, the abbey developed into an important spiritual center. The monastery experienced a particular period of flourishing under Abbot Gregor II. Fuchs from 1715 to 1755, who initiated extensive construction projects. Under his leadership, a new, three-towered abbey church of considerable size and beauty, designed by Joseph Greissing, was erected starting in 1716. However, after the secularization in 1803, this church, whose main tower reached almost 70 meters in height, was demolished in 1809 for economic reasons. The monastic buildings located to the south of the church, also planned by Greissing and later completed by Johann Leonhard Stahl d. Ä., have been preserved. Following the demolition of the church, these buildings were referred to as “Schloss Theres” and have since appeared as a Baroque castle complex. In 1804, Theodor von Kretschmann acquired the estate, and in 1830, it passed into the possession of Georg von Ditfurth. Later, in 1856, Henry von Swaine acquired most of the property and modernized the estate's operations. The Counts of Beust inherited the castle in 1976.

The Theres monastery is located in the Haßberge region of Bavaria at an elevation of approximately 234 meters above sea level.

The preserved monastic buildings are now referred to as “Schloss Theres” and present themselves as a horseshoe-shaped 18th-century castle complex. They are a registered architectural monument in Bavaria.
