The provostry of Schkölen was founded around the year 1140, when Benedictine monks established a settlement here. Over the centuries, the Benedictines shaped the spiritual and cultural life of the area. The provostry existed until the Reformation and was finally dissolved in 1535 during the secularization, marking the end of the monastic era in Schkölen.
