Admont Abbey

The Benedictine Admont Abbey was founded in 1074 by Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg, based on the possessions of Saint Hemma of Gurk. Already in the 12th century, a scriptorium was established, producing valuable manuscripts. The abbey played a significant role in 1292 in connection with the noble uprising of the Landsberger Bund under Abbot Heinrich II, who supported Duke Albrecht I. Abbot Engelbert of Admont, who reigned from 1297 to 1327, was a prominent scholar of his time. After periods of decline due to the Ottoman Wars and the Reformation, the monastery experienced a new resurgence during the Counter-Reformation. Artistic highlights characterized the 17th and 18th centuries through the works of Brother Benno Haan and Josef Stammel. A devastating fire in 1865 destroyed almost the entire monastery, but reconstruction began just one year later. During the Great Depression in 1930, art treasures had to be sold, and during the Nazi era, the monastery was dissolved and its property confiscated, before the convent could return after the war.

Admont Abbey is located in the market town of Admont in the district of Liezen, Styria, Austria, at an elevation of approximately 633 m above sea level.

Today, Admont Abbey continues to operate as an active monastic institution. It is a center for art and science and, in addition to the famous abbey library, houses a modern museum that presents art from the Middle Ages to the present day, a natural history museum, and early manuscripts.
