Beningaburg Castle

As early as 1400, there were three chieftain's castles in Dornum, including the later Beningaburg, then called Osterburg. The moated castle was built between 1375 and 1380 by olde Hero Attena. After his death in 1410, the Osterburg passed to his son Enno. Later, Sibet Attena inherited the castle. In 1461, Tanne Kankena received the Osterburg as compensation. After his death in 1473, his son Eger Kankena inherited the castle, followed by his third son Remmer Kankena. As Remmer remained childless, the Osterburg fell to his sister Nona, who was married to Folkmar I. Beninga, after his demise around 1545. After both died of the plague in 1512, their son Garrelt took over, but he passed away in 1546. His son Folkmar II. Beninga solidified the Beninga family's rule over the Osterburg. Since then, the castle has been known as Beningaburg.
