Bertradaburg Castle

The origins of Bertradaburg date back a long way, as it was built on the foundations of a Roman fort, likely protecting a Roman road. Although its documented mention as a state fortress of the Imperial Abbey of Prüm only occurred in the 13th century, archaeological findings suggest earlier structures. According to local tradition, Bertrada, Charlemagne's mother, is said to have lived here, suggesting his birth around 747. After the occupation and damage of Prüm Abbey by French revolutionary troops between 1794 and 1802, the castle was privatized and auctioned off during secularization.
