Bettendorfer Hof Manor

In the year 1428, the vaulted cellar, the entrance to today's wine cellar "Beim Onkel Ludwig", was first mentioned. An arch stone at the entrance bears witness to this. The residential house built thereafter passed into the ownership of the Barons von Bettendorf in 1724. As an allodial estate or "free property", the land originally belonged 500 years ago to Knight Hans Jakob von Dürn and his son, Schweikhard zu Rippberg (the district of Rippberg was named after him). He served the Bishop of Würzburg.

In 1792, the manor house of the Barons von Bettendorf, built in profane Baroque style, whose coat of arms can still be found in the walls surrounding the large estate, passed into bourgeois hands.
The daughter of the new owner, Josef Anton Kreuter, together with her husband, Mr. Peter Claes, opened an inn called "Zum Riesen" around 1800, which remained in family ownership for generations until 1981.

In 1981, the "Zum Riesen" area with its manor house passed to the city of Walldürn. Subsequently, in 1984, the Palais von Bettendorf was sold to the Best family and returned to its original use as a formerly very simple, now upscale restaurant. In 1983, the manor house was then extended with a hotel wing, which architecturally adapts particularly well to both the landscape and the manor house. Since then, the former Palais von Bettendorf has borne the name "Hotel-Landgasthof Zum Riesen" and, in addition to excellent international and local cuisine, offers uncomplicated, friendly and naturally managed gastronomy. From 1992 to 1999, this traditional house was operated by the Peter Seifert family. In 1994, the popular series actor Günther Strack, known from the series "Die Drombuschs", was an honored guest in this house, where he also took over the patronage for the wine cellar "Beim Onkel Ludwig" named after him. On November 16, 1999, at 3:33 p.m., the "Zum Riesen" project passed into the ownership of the Siegfried Genzel family. Since then, it has appropriately borne the name Hotel & Restaurant "Zum Riesen" in honor of the house and its management.
