Beylerbeyi Palace

Local Authorities

On the Asian side of Istanbul, on the Bosphorus, lies the Beylerbeyi Palace, a residence. It is one of the structures of its kind in the metropolis.

History+

The construction of the current Beylerbeyi Palace took place between 1861 and 1865, commissioned by Sultan Abdülaziz. Sarkis Balyan was responsible for the design as the architect. Even before this structure, a wooden palace stood on the same site, built in the 16th century under Sultan Mahmut I. The palace served the sultans and their families as a summer residence and hosted guests, including the wife of Napoléon III, Empress Elisabeth, the King of Montenegro, and Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.
