Binderburg Castle

Burgau Castle was built in the 13th century by the Lords of Burgau. In 1305, it belonged to the House of Wettin and was burned down in 1450 during the Saxon Fratricidal War. Although attempts were made to rebuild the castle in 1510, the last remnants were demolished in 1755. In 1906, Prof. Adolph Binder erected the "Binderburg" on the castle hill. He also carried out archaeological excavations on the hill between 1910 and 1920, which uncovered the remains of walls and cellars of the old castle. In 1949, the Binderburg became state property and gradually fell into disrepair due to lack of maintenance. In 2003, the Jena physicist Dr. Michael Willsch acquired the complex and began its renovation.
