Houses of parliament

The Binnenhof in The Hague is not an ordinary castle, but a historic building complex that has been the political heart of the Netherlands for centuries. Nestled in the city center, which once developed around it, it now houses the First and Second Chambers of the Dutch States General, making it a living testament to the country's history.

History+

The origins of the Binnenhof date back to the late 12th or early 13th century, with precise details of its creation remaining unclear. It is believed that Count Floris IV acquired the site in 1229. It is certain that Count William II of Holland began construction of a castle there in 1250, intended to replace an older hunting lodge. His son Floris V completed the construction and moved his residence there in 1291. From 1593, the settlement around the Binnenhof developed into the political center of the Netherlands. In the 17th century, the Golden Age, the Binnenhof was an important stage for European diplomacy.
