Binsfeld Castle

The castle's origins date back to 1397, when Knight Heinrich Mule von Binsfeld enfeoffed a castle he had built to the Duke of Jülich and received it back as a fief. In 1533, Werner von Binsfeld undertook a reconstruction of the manor house, partly on the foundations of an older predecessor. This rectangular brick building was originally surrounded by a moat, separating it from the outer bailey. It has three stories on the field side and two on the courtyard side. A round tower adorns the southeast corner, while an octagonal stair tower stands on the northeast corner. The two-story loggias, each with six arcades, on the courtyard side are noteworthy. An inscription above the entrance portal displays the coat of arms of the founding families Binsfeld-Nesselrode and the year 1553. Around 1960, the loggias underwent renovation. During World War II, parts of the economic buildings were destroyed by bombing but were rebuilt in 1941/42. The main building remained undamaged. Until 1986, the castle was used for agricultural purposes. After a sale in 1990, the complex underwent a renovation with a modern extension to the manor house. Since 1993, Binsfeld Castle has served as a senior residence.

Binsfeld Castle is located in Binsfeld, a district of the municipality of Nörvenich in the Düren district, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 138 m above sea level.

Today, Binsfeld Castle houses a senior residence with around 180 places. The character of the manor house was altered by a modern extension in the 1990s.
