Episcopal Palace

The origins of the Episcopal Palace date back to 1254, when Ottokar of Graz gifted his house to Bishop Ulrich of Seckau. Initially located outside the city walls, the building was integrated into the city's fortifications around 1265/67. Extensive work was carried out between 1481 and 1502, and a library was added in 1613. After the relocation of the bishop's seat from Seggau Castle to Graz and the diocesan reorganization under Emperor Joseph II, the palace became the permanent princely episcopal residence. In the early 19th century, under Prince-Bishop Joseph Adam von Arco, the building's structure was unified, resulting in a new chapel, a new facade, and a portal with a coat of arms cartouche.
