Bishop's Castle

A predecessor building, merely referred to as a “house,” has been documented since 1240, while the “castle” itself was first mentioned in 1414. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the complex was destroyed by local farmers but was immediately rebuilt under Bishop Heinrich IV. Further expansions took place around 1600 under Bishop Philipp I. Over the next 200 years, the castle served the diocese as an agricultural estate and gradually fell into disrepair. Between 1732 and 1743, three of the four corner towers were demolished or partially removed due to dilapidation; a prison was integrated into the remaining tower. The southwestern tower fell victim to a fire in 1885.
