Bishop Castle Leuk
The Bischoffschloss in Leuk, an impressive complex in the canton of Valais, Switzerland, combines historical architecture with a turbulent past. It once served as the residence and official seat of the Meier of Leuk and bears witness to the power and presence of the bishops in this region.
History+
The origins of the castle possibly date back to the 12th century, with a square main tower as its oldest component. In the 13th century, the bishops took over the originally smaller castle from the Lords of Leuk and expanded it into a representative complex. This is evident in the two rectangular palas buildings, which were constructed in different phases of the early to mid-13th century. A fire in 1415 destroyed parts of the castle, but it was rebuilt. In the 17th century, the Bischoffschloss was the scene of significant trials, including the trial against Knight Antoine Stockalper in 1627 and witch trials.

Today, the Bischoffschloss houses a museum and is accessible to visitors. The complex was restored in 1937/38, and a comprehensive renovation is currently being prepared. Visitors can admire the late Romanesque windows and the impressive fireplace system of the palas buildings.
