History+
The origins of Blackwater Castle date back to the Anglo-Norman Roche family, who arrived in Ireland in the 12th century. They erected a castle here, which gave the town of Castletownroche its name. Over the centuries, the Roches increasingly assimilated into Irish culture and often represented Irish interests, bringing them into conflict with the English Crown. In the 17th century, they eventually lost their possessions. In 1666, the castle was granted to Lieutenant Colonel John Widenham and renamed Castle Widenham, in recognition of his military services.
