Blackwater Castle

The Anglo-Norman Roche family, who arrived in Ireland in the 12th century, erected a castle here, which gave the town of Castletownroche its name. The Roches assimilated into Irish culture and often represented Irish interests, bringing them into conflict with the English Crown. In the 17th century, they lost their possessions. In 1666, the castle was granted to Lieutenant Colonel John Widenham and renamed Castle Widenham, in recognition of his military services.
