Blens Castle

To be privately owned

Blens Castle is a defensive structure in the Blens district of the town of Heimbach in North Rhine-Westphalia. The complex is now privately owned.

History+

The origins of the castle date back to the early 12th century, when a Johannes de Blens was first documented as its owner. After the male line of the de Blens family died out in 1380, the castle passed through marriage to the von Berg family. When this line also became extinct around 1550, the estate was inherited by Agnes von Blens. In the 18th century, through further marriages, the castle came into the possession of the Barons Raitz von Frentz and later the Barons Beissel von Gymnich. In the 20th century, Blens Castle finally passed into the ownership of the von Abercron family through the marriage of Georg Anton Beissel von Gymnich, who still reside there today.

Today, Blens Castle appears as a four-winged farmstead. The central manor house, a two-story rubble stone building with a half-hipped roof, was constructed around 1791. Of the original hill castle, only the stump of a round tower and fragments of the curtain wall remain. A unique feature is the still-preserved courtyard paving made of Rur pebbles. The castle is privately owned.
