Bodiam Castle

The Castle can be visited

In the county of East Sussex, England, stands the ruin of Bodiam Castle. The complex, surrounded by a wide moat, is an example of a late medieval moated castle.

History+

The history of Bodiam Castle begins in 1385, when Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, a knight who had fought for Edward III in France, received royal permission from Richard II to fortify his manor house. Dalyngrigge, who had acquired the Bodiam estate through marriage, erected an entirely new moated castle. The construction work, which he could not personally supervise due to his duties as port captain in Brest, was completed around 1392. After Dalyngrigge's death in 1395, the castle changed hands multiple times.
