In Redmire, North Yorkshire, stands Bolton Castle, a castellated ruin. Known as a former place of imprisonment for Mary Queen of Scots and as a backdrop for historical films, the complex with its compact construction and once mighty walls.

History+

The construction of Bolton Castle began in 1378 under Richard le Scrope and was completed in 1399. The complex was characterized by its robust fortifications, with three-story residential buildings around a courtyard and originally five-story corner towers. A peculiarity was the absence of flanking gate towers or a drawbridge.
