Bomarsund Linnoitus (Fortress)
The ruins of Bomarsund Fortress, located on the Åland Islands in Finland, bear witness to a turbulent history as a Russian bastion in the northern Baltic Sea. Once a strategically important point, it is now a freely accessible historical monument.
History+
After the Åland Islands became part of the Russian Empire in 1809, construction of Bomarsund Fortress began in 1832. This undertaking met with protests from British Foreign Secretary Palmerston, as Great Britain and Sweden viewed the complex as a threat to their regional interests and trade. During the Crimean War, Bomarsund fell to a superior Anglo-French fleet in 1854. Despite numerous cannons, the fortress was weakly secured on the landward side and not yet fully completed. On August 16, 1854, the Russian defenders capitulated, and the fortress was subsequently blown up. The Åland Convention of 1856 prohibited Russia from rebuilding fortifications on the islands and declared the region a demilitarized zone.
