Bonn Minster

Catholic Church

Bonn Minster, a significant cathedral in the heart of Bonn, North Rhine-Westphalia, is an outstanding example of Romanesque architecture and shapes the city's skyline as a landmark. It serves as the city's main Catholic church and is part of the Archdiocese of Cologne.

History+

The origins of Bonn Minster stretch back considerably. Archaeological discoveries such as altars dedicated to Roman gods and a necropolis from the 2nd century indicate an early cult site at this location. In the 6th century, an initial hall building was erected, serving as a burial site for Merovingians. By the late 7th century at the latest, clerics settled nearby. At the end of the 8th century, the Cassius Collegiate Foundation was established here, and the collegiate church of St. Cassius and Florentius was built. Around 1050, the old collegiate church was demolished and replaced by a Romanesque new building, a three-aisled cruciform basilica with a double choir arrangement. Following the secularization of the foundation in the early 19th century and the demolition of the adjacent parish church of St. Martin, the Minster came into the possession of St. Martin's parish. Since 1956, it has held the title of a Basilica minor.
