Braemar Castle

To be privately owned

In the high valley of the Scottish River Dee in Braemar, Aberdeenshire, stands Braemar Castle. Construction began in 1628 under John Erskine, the Earl of Mar and Treasurer to James VI. It originally served as a royal hunting lodge and a strategic defensive stronghold against the Farquharson Clan. In 1689, the Farquharsons succeeded in capturing and setting fire to the castle, reducing it to ruins. It was not until 1748 that it was rebuilt in its current form.
