Brahetrolleborg (Castle)

Brahetrolleborg Castle on the Danish island of Funen, near the village of Korinth, is a historic building with a fascinating past. Originally a Cistercian monastery, it was transformed into a stately castle after secularization and is now known as Brahetrolleborg.
History+
The origins of the present castle date back to 1172, when the Cistercian monastery of Holme, also known as Insula Dei, was founded. It was a daughter foundation of Herrevad Monastery in what was then Scania. After the Reformation and the end of the Count's Feud in 1536, the monastery became property of the Danish state. In 1664, the Danish crown sold the estate to the Holstein merchant Christoffer von Gabel, who, however, relinquished it just three years later. Since 1722, the castle has been owned by the Reventlow family. The estate bore various names throughout its history; from 1568 it was called Rantzausholm and since 1667 it has been known as Brahetrolleborg. The monastery church, built according to the Bernardine plan, now serves as Brahetrolleborg Church and houses a crucifix by Claus Berg from around 1500.
