History+
Construction of the current mansion began in 1605 under Edward Zouche, the 11th Baron Zouche of Harringworth, and was completed in 1612. An older building previously stood on the same site, traces of which can still be found within the mansion. In 1621, George Abbott accidentally killed a gamekeeper in the castle park. In 1699, Sir John Scope acquired the estate. The Scope family carried out various alterations in the 17th and 18th centuries, including the shortening of the south wings in 1793 and changes to the interior.
