Brandenburg Gate
At Pariser Platz in the Mitte district of the German capital is the Brandenburg Gate. It was erected in the late 18th century and is an example of early classical architecture.
History+
Commissioned by Prussian King Frederick William II, the Brandenburg Gate was constructed between 1788 and 1791 by Carl Gotthard Langhans. It originally served as a city gate and was inspired by the Propylaea of the Athenian Acropolis. It was occupied by Napoleon, who had the Quadriga taken to Paris before its return in 1814. During the division of Germany, the gate marked the border between East and West Berlin. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, it became an emblem of German and European reunification.
