Brandenburg Gate
The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin is a world-renowned monument and a national symbol, located at Pariser Platz in the Mitte district of the German capital. Commissioned by Prussian King Frederick William II, the Brandenburg Gate was constructed between 1788 and 1791 by Carl Gotthard Langhans. It originally served as a city gate and was inspired by the Propylaea of the Athenian Acropolis. Throughout its history, it has witnessed numerous historical events, including its occupation by Napoleon, who had the Quadriga taken to Paris before its return in 1814. During the division of Germany, the gate marked the border between East and West Berlin, thus becoming a symbol of the Cold War. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, it became an emblem of German and European reunification.
