Brandsburg Castle (Alten-Buseck)
The Brandsburg is a castle in Alten-Buseck, a village in the municipality of Buseck in the district of Gießen in Hesse. It is located within the village at an elevation of approximately 227 m above sea level. It is a lowland castle, which was once surrounded by a water-filled moat. The castle was demolished after 1730 and rebuilt in 1735.
The castle complex was approximately square and is now a two-story manor house with a mansard roof and a modern, former factory extension.
In addition to the Brandsburg, the Zaunburg/Tzanburg, the Eitelsburg, and the Hofburg are also mentioned in documents for Alten-Buseck.
The Brandsburg was first mentioned in 1490, after members of the von Buseck gen. Brand family had surrendered it to the Hessian Landgrave and received it from him as a fief. The fief of Brandsburg usually also includes a farm in Beuern.
Today, the castle complex is used in various ways. In addition to office spaces, it serves as a youth meeting point, a community room for rural women, and occasionally as an exhibition space. It houses the public library and the local municipal archive.
