Brunswick Cathedral
Braunschweig Cathedral, a significant sacred building in Braunschweig, was founded in 1173 by Henry the Lion. Conceived as a burial place for him and his second wife Matilda of England, it is an outstanding example of Romanesque architecture in Lower Saxony and bears witness to the power and influence of its founder.
History+
Construction work for the collegiate church began in 1173 after Henry's return from the Holy Land. During his exile to England between 1182 and 1185, construction was likely interrupted. By approximately 1188, the eastern side of the building was completed, and despite a roof fire in Henry's year of death, 1195, the nave and parts of the towers were already finished. Henry the Lion and Matilda were buried in the unfinished cathedral; their joint tomb was created around 1230. The cathedral was consecrated on December 29, 1226, with Thomas Becket added as the third patron saint. Since 1543, Braunschweig Cathedral has served as a Protestant place of worship.
