Briesnitzer Church

The origins of the Briesnitz Church lie in a chapel, erected around 1050 on an elevation above the Elbe riverbank, possibly on the site of a Slavic sanctuary. This Romanesque building was one of the first early Christian churches in Saxony. In the 12th century, Briesnitz became the seat of an archdeacon, and the church administered up to 26 surrounding villages. During conflicts over the Briesnitz Burgward, this first church was destroyed in 1223. In the mid-13th century, a new building was constructed approximately 150 meters away at the current location, whose basic features have been preserved to this day. The oldest structural elements, including a trefoil-shaped east window, are found in the Gothic choir.
