Brough Castle

The remains of the Castle can be visited

In the county of Cumbria, England, Brough Castle stands as a ruin, built on the foundations of a Roman fort.

History+

The origins of Brough Castle date back to 1092, when William Rufus had the castle built on the site of the former Roman fort of Verterae, which was in use until the 5th century. In 1174, the castle suffered severe damage from Scottish attackers but was subsequently rebuilt. In 1260, ownership passed to the Clifford family, who expanded the complex into a fortress. A fire broke out in 1521 during a Christmas celebration hosted by Henry Clifford at the castle, reducing the estate to ashes.
