History+

The Federal Fortress Ulm was one of five federal fortresses constructed after Napoleon's defeat in 1815 to secure the territories of the German Confederation. Between 1842 and 1859, under the direction of Moritz Karl Ernst von Prittwitz und Gaffron, one of the largest fortifications of the 19th century was built, featuring a polygonal main rampart of approximately nine kilometers. The Courtine with Ehinger Tor was constructed between 1843 and 1855 under Lieutenant Faber du Faur, connecting the Upper Danube Bastion with the Middle Bastion. It comprised a rampart system with the inner Ehinger Tor, a caponier to secure the moat, and an escarpe and tenaille.
