History+

The Federal Fortress of Ulm, which includes Fort Albeck, was constructed between 1842 and 1859. It was one of five federal fortresses funded by the German Confederation to ensure the security of its member states. Fort Albeck itself began construction in 1846 on the Safranberg and was completed in 1859 as the last work of the entire fortress. It was designed to accommodate up to 1,340 men and was reinforced around 1880 with additional hollow traverses in the rampart. From 1897, it served as a base for the 2nd Company of the 9th Württemberg Infantry Regiment No. 127. After 1918, it was used solely for military exercises. During World War II, the fort suffered damage from bombing raids and attacks by the Wehrmacht.
