History+
The Federal Fortress of Ulm was one of five federal fortresses financed and built by the German Confederation after the Napoleonic Wars. Between 1842 and 1859, under the direction of the Prussian fortress construction director Moritz Karl Ernst von Prittwitz und Gaffron, one of the largest fortifications of the 19th century was erected. Fort Friedrichsau was built from 1852 to 1854 under First Lieutenant Blumhardt. It was the only fort in the entire complex to feature a wet moat.
