Federal Fortress Ulm-Fort Örlinger Tower

The Federal Fortress of Ulm, to which the Örlinger Turm belongs, was one of five federal fortresses financed and constructed by the German Confederation in the 19th century. It was built between 1842 and 1859 under the direction of Moritz Karl Ernst von Prittwitz und Gaffron, representing the largest fortification of its time with a polygonal main rampart of approximately 9 km. Fort Örlinger Turm itself was completed between 1850 and 1852 under First Lieutenant Arlt. It served to protect the Filstalbahn railway and could accommodate 106 men.
