History+

The Federal Fortress Ulm, to which Fort Unterer Kuhberg belongs, was one of five fortresses financed by the German Confederation. Under the direction of the Prussian fortress construction director Moritz Karl Ernst von Prittwitz und Gaffron, a polygonal main rampart of about nine kilometers was created. Fort Unterer Kuhberg itself was built from 1846 to 1858 and could accommodate up to 1,300 soldiers. It is characterized by a reduit, a rampart system with 25 gun emplacements, an escarpe, a dry moat, and a hornwork.
