The Kienlesbergbastion, a component of the former Federal Fortress of Ulm, is located in Ulm, Baden-Württemberg, at an elevation of approximately 503 meters above sea level.

History+

The Kienlesbergbastion was constructed between 1843 and 1852 under the direction of von Hügel. It was designed to accommodate a garrison of up to 390 soldiers. The Federal Fortress of Ulm, to which the bastion belongs, was one of five federal fortresses of the German Confederation, financed and expanded after the Napoleonic Wars to secure the territories. The entire Federal Fortress was completed in 1859. After World War I, the Federal Fortress of Ulm escaped demolition as it did not fall under the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles. Nevertheless, destruction during World War II and subsequent decay led to the loss of many of its structures.
