History+

The Federal Fortress of Ulm, to which the Illerkanal Outwork belongs, was one of five federal fortresses of the German Confederation and was built between 1842 and 1859. It was designed by the Prussian fortress construction director Moritz Karl Ernst von Prittwitz und Gaffron. The Illerkanal Outwork, originally planned as Outwork No. 15, was constructed from 1850 to 1853 under the direction of First Lieutenant Oppermann (Hanover) and the Bavarian First Lieutenants Ysenburg and Leutner. It could accommodate up to 265 soldiers.
