Alt-Falkenstein Castle stands at the entrance of a narrow gorge near Balsthal in the canton of Solothurn. This complex, which once played an important role in border protection, now houses a museum.

History+

The origins of Alt-Falkenstein Castle date back to the 13th century. It was built at the behest of the Bishop of Basel, Burkhard von Fenis, who had been rewarded by Emperor Henry IV for his loyalty during the Investiture Controversy with lands, including the Landgraviate of Buchsgau. To secure his new territory, he had the castle built on a rock in the Jura transverse valley.
