Altenwied Castle is a historic spur castle in Rhineland-Palatinate, located in the district of Neuwied, near Neustadt (Wied). It sits on a rocky outcrop, overlooking the Wied valley.

History+

The origins of Altenwied Castle date back to the early 12th century, when it served as the seat of Countess Kunigunde von Bilstein. In the mid-13th century, ownership transferred to the Electorate of Cologne, facilitated by Countess Mechthild von Sayn, and included the parishes of Asbach, Neustadt, and Windhagen. The castle subsequently became the center of the Altenwied office.
