History+
The construction of Altleiningen Castle, then known as Leiningen Castle, is attributed to the Leiningen Counts Emich I and Emich II, who presumably built it between 1100 and 1110. The complex, whose layout followed the shape of the mountain peak, was triangular and featured an outer bailey separated by a moat. In 1525, the castle suffered its first destruction during the Peasants' Revolt. From 1528, it was rebuilt in Renaissance style by Counts Cuno II, Philipp I, Ludwig, and Johann Casimir. An addition around 1600 was a tunnel driven into the rock for water supply. In the War of the Palatine Succession in 1690, the castle was destroyed by French troops and subsequently served as a quarry for a long time until this was prohibited in the mid-19th century.
