Altrathen Castle
Altrathen Castle, a rock castle near the municipality of Rathen in Saxon Switzerland, underwent Neo-Gothic restoration in the late 19th century.
History+
The origins of Altrathen Castle likely date back to the 11th century, possibly built concurrently with the neighboring Neurathen rock castle. Its first documented mention dates to 1289. In 1469, the castle was razed along with Neurathen. It was not until 1888 that industrialist Eduard Seifert acquired the remains and had the complex rebuilt in Neo-Gothic style by 1893. Only the cellars and parts of a spiral staircase of the keep survived from the original medieval structure. After 1945, the building initially served as a company holiday home before being privatized by the Treuhandanstalt in 1995.
