Alzenau Castle

The construction of Alzenau Castle took place between 1395 and 1399 by the Archbishops of Mainz, Konrad II von Weinsberg and Johann II von Nassau. It served as an official and administrative residence for the Electors of Mainz. From 1400 to 1500, the castle was repeatedly used as collateral to cover the costs of warfare and defense. In 1500, the Freigericht, to which Alzenau belonged, became a joint fief of the Electorate of Mainz and the Counts of Hanau, with Alzenau Castle serving as the administrative seat of an official. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was captured by Swedish troops on New Year's Eve 1634.
