Bachem Castle
Bachem Castle, also known as Bachem Palace, is a former moated castle in the Bachem district of Frechen (Schloßstraße 8) in the Rhein-Erft-Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia.
In the Middle Ages, Oberbachem with Bachem Castle and Unterbachem with Hemmerich belonged to different territories, the Duchy of Jülich and Electoral Cologne.
The castle was probably founded at the beginning of the 13th century or earlier, as indicated by the foundations of a residential tower from 1250, which was built from an early Roman aqueduct. In 1583, the castle was destroyed.
After the Thirty Years' War, the tower and the south wing were rebuilt, the three-arched bridge was erected, and in 1705 the north wing was rebuilt.
In the 18th century, the castle was owned by Baron Antonius von Geldern, and in the 19th century, the von Fürstenberg family acquired the castle and extensively renovated the property.

The moated castle, whose foundations stand on wooden piles (similar to Venice), is divided into a main castle and an outer bailey, surrounded by a partially reflooded moat system. Apart from the Roman brick castle house, the preserved buildings date from the 17th to 18th centuries. From 1973 to 1978, the main castle was largely renovated, is again in private ownership, and is inhabited.
