Bentheim Castle

The origins of Bentheim Castle date back to the 11th century, with the first documented mentions around 1050 as property of the Counts of Bentheim. In 1116, the complex, likely still a wooden structure, was conquered, plundered, and completely destroyed by Duke Lothar of Süpplinburg. After its reconstruction, the castle came into the possession of Count Otto of Salm-Rheineck. Later, through the marriage of his daughter Sophie to Dietrich VI of Holland, the dominion of Bentheim passed to the Counts of Holland. From 1421, the lords bore the title Counts of Bentheim, and in 1486, the county was recognized as an imperial fief. Count Arnold II introduced the Reformed doctrine at the end of the 16th century. During the Thirty Years' War and the Seven Years' War, the castle was repeatedly besieged, captured, and partially severely damaged. In 1752, Count Friedrich Carl Philipp pledged the county to Hanover, ending its independence. Following the destruction of the wars, reconstruction began in 1848, with the Kronenburg, the medieval palas, being expanded into a representative residence under Prince Alexis II.

Bentheim Castle is located in Bad Bentheim, in the district of Grafschaft Bentheim, Lower Saxony, Germany. It stands at an elevation of approximately 91 meters above sea level.

Today, Bentheim Castle is open to visitors and houses a museum. A small private section continues to be inhabited by members of the Counts of Bentheim and Steinfurt. However, visitors can explore almost all other parts of the complex, including the splendid rooms of the Kronenburg with exhibitions of medieval artifacts. The castle provides information in German and Dutch and can be explored independently or as part of guided tours. Weddings are possible in the Ernst-August-Salon. Admission is charged.
