In the southern part of Witten's city center is Burg Berge, also known as Haus Witten. The complex was originally built in the 15th century and now serves as a cultural venue, housing, among other things, a music school.

History+

Around 1470, Burg Berge was built by Rötger and Franco von Witten, with the first documented mention dating back to 1479. In 1651, the property suffered severe damage from a fire during the Jülich-Cleves War of Succession, caused by the troops of Charles of Lorraine. Gerhard Wennemar von der Recke initiated its reconstruction and expansion with baroque elements in 1701. In the late 18th century, Johann Friedrich Lohmann leased the complex, established a cast steel factory and grain distillery there, and later acquired it.
